For the love of literature...

If you're a nerdlette like myself, you have a set of shelves overflowing with books, a list of things you know you must read, plus a pile of books next to your bed which have been lovingly dogeared.

Sometimes, its not all about the kids. Sometimes, its gotta be about us grown ups, because Learning Never Stops for us too! :)

Here's a look at what's piled up on my bedside table right now:

Every now and then I read outside my typical genres and explore something new. Occasionally this leads to frustration, but more often than not I'm rewarded - The Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan (of Joy Luck Club and Chinese Cinderella fame) was one rewarding read.
Tan so expertly weaves a rich tapestry in a story of a young American girl, Violet, brought up in a high class courtesan house in Shanghai. Violet is torn away from her family in a time of instability and deception and forced to make her way through the world of customs and politics that surrounds the life of a courtesan. Its a long one, and takes a bit to get into - but in the end I struggled to put it down.

I'm a bit of a nut for futuristic dystopias. I love the idea of an imperfect world, and the story of a character trying to slowly peel away layers to find a big ol' truth nugget.
One such series that is keeping me peeling is this entrancing trilogy by Hugh Howey:

I'm currently reading Dust, the final chapter, and let me tell you - shit is really hitting the fan. This is a series best read a little apart from each other, as they are fairly intense - definitely not a relaxing beach holiday kind of book, but it will suck you in to the crazy world Howey has created. The story is set years from now, in a time where Earth's population lives underground in a silo, as the world outside has become inhospitable. Political drama, conspiracies, murder and coverups ensue. If you're nearby me and want to borrow it, just holler :)
